Inspired by my weird dream last night where a woman argued with her mother-in-law to stop calling her and her husband two sides of the same coin, but to call them two sides of the same tree. I know, I get inspiration from the weirdest places… <3
“Two sides of the same coin“
Her mother insisted
Her words echoed through the night of their wedding.
Despite the obvious charm
settled in those words,
The couple could not help but disagree.
Their friendship was a seed planted into the soil,
With their two bare pairs of hands
That grovelled in the dirt.
That began their days
Of meeting in dark secrecy.
“Perhaps we are two sides of the same coin,”
The boy suggested.
“Or perhaps we are two vines intertwined?”
The girl remarked.
Tendrils sprouted,
Reaching for the sun,
Their sudden love growing from right down under.
Never having loved,
The two shared an oath
To never break the beauty
of their bond of friendship.
But love is no easy game,
And the rain began to tumble.
Yet their little sprout
did not seem to crumble.
It watered their love,
And the sprout grew further,
From a tendril to a plant,
With a stalk that shot upwards.
The sun came out once more,
Offering its golden solace
and Together they watched
as the sun set and rose,
And for the first time,
their little plant blossomed.
With a flowery tone of pink
and a hint of something special.
The sweet-smelling pink of petals
Reminded the boy
Of a floral beauty that only resided in her.
Their hearts wished for more,
No longer content without the other’s love.
The boy met her at the beach—
The place they’d shared their hopes and dreams.
And with a fluttery confession
About how her eyes outshined those around her,
And the sweet perfume that followed where she’d go,
And the sparks that flew when he was with her,
Their love was sealed with a kiss from his girl.
They were friends no longer,
But lovers with newfound conviction.
However, their love
Was still too small
And too tender
To face any problems.
Realizing their inability to face any storm,
They kept their love under wraps
And placed a blanket over their plant.
Hidden from the sun,
They met under the stars.
They dreamed to one day point at the clouds
And make up the shapes—
of wings and angels—
But for now, they were content
with tracing the constellation.
Hand in hand,
as they pointed to the sky.
Suddenly the wind began to pick up,
And a storm rained down from the heavenly sky.
Disapproval was evident
from all sides of their future,
And the two went their separate ways,
Like desperate fools.
The enemies came upon their plant,
And with rough hands plowing through the dirt,
Attempted to uproot what had been just planted.
Though small and premature
the plant seemed to be,
The time spent in hiding
allowed for a stronger anchor of roots.
Right then and there,
No man could uproot,
A task deemed impossible by those all around.
The vines of the root,
dug deeply underground.
And the two began to realize
The strength of their love.
With hands intertwined,
They ran through the hills
Through wildflowers and ferns,
Till they were back where they were.
They removed the blanket,
And finally let the light in.
With time, it grew taller,
And its bark had grown thicker.
It now was a tree,
Large enough for two
to bask under its shade,
There they would lay,
pointing to the sky
and interpreting the clouds.
Then one day,
Right under the tree,
The boy got on one knee
And pulled out a ring.
A recount of their love,
journey and hardships.
The boy then asked the question
The one most dream of.
The girl was in tears,
and dared not to speak,
fearful that this was all just a dream.
She nodded her head—
And there they embraced,
Right under their labour of love.
With joyous excitement
she ran down the aisle,
Toward her one and only lover,
Who’d make her smile.
The ceremony was awkward,
And the people were far from approving,
But the boy and the girl only noticed the other.
Years passed for both,
And their wedding bands no longer fit.
With age comes weight,
And neither could wear
their vows of eternity no more.
So that’s when they placed
their rings on a branch.
And time passed us by—
Just like they did.
And around the rings grew
two tendrils of green
That overlapped one another
showcasing eternity.
There on the branch
Their rings still rest—
On their labour of love
the testament of life.
